Category:  Dining

It’s hot and humid in Tulsa, and that means it's time for cold margaritas! Downtown Tulsa is known for its creativity in art, music, food, and more, and of course, our margaritas are nothing short of artistic in every way. We have margaritas in so many flavors, with a variety of tequilas, and in all the fancy glasses you can think of. If you need to cool off this summer, visit Downtown Tulsa to try one of our margs. Here is a short list of where you can go!

Mexicali Border Cafe

Mexicali Border Cafe

For those who love margaritas Tex-Mex style, try Mexicali. They’ve been in the Tulsa Arts District for nearly 30 years, but their story starts in 1917 when Julio Tumatoe won the Mexicali cantina in a poker game. Ol’ Julio was good at poker, but his wife was even better at cooking. As she made fresh Baja dishes from generational recipes in the little kitchen out back, word spread fast that Mexicali had the best food and the coldest drinks. Here are some recommendations:

  • Julio's House: Gold Tequila, Triple Sec, and Julio’s Secret Mix served frozen or on the rocks
  • Sangria Swirl: Mexicali's Famous Sangria swirled into a frozen house margarita
  • Hibiscus Rita: Mi Campo Reposado Tequila, Triple Sec, Julio’s Secret Mix, and fresh-made house hibiscus syrup

Day drinking at Elote, anyone? When Libby Billings opened Elote in 2008, she wanted to serve fresh, innovative Mexican food in Downtown's Deco District using local products and sustainable practices. Elote is now key in the revitalization of the District, hosting community events, including Salsafest, Cinco de Mayo, Drag Brunch, and luchador wrestling. They have a whole menu of margaritas that will astound! Try these:

  • Coconut Margarita: Coconut cream and Elote's signature house-made margarita with a toasted coconut rim
  • Cucumber Margarita: Fresh Cucumber and cilantro muddled with their house-made margarita and chili lime salt rim
  • The Orange Mint Margarita: The house-made margarita with Gran Gala, fresh muddled orange, and mint

La Tertulia
La Tertulia

La Tertulia

The story of La Tertulia in Tulsa's Blue Dome District dates back 50 years. June and Willie Ortiz, two Santa Feans without any experience in the restaurant industry, embraced their love of Native New Mexican food to bring a fine dining experience to Santa Fe. Using Willie’s pension, they leased a convent to open their first restaurant. Now the Ortizes have reimagined this family treasure with you here in Downtown Tulsa! Here are a few delicious drinks:

  • House Margarita: Tequila Orendain Reposado, Combier, lime, and simple syrup. Go crazy and get yourself a whole liter!
  • Melon: Libélula Tequila, melon liqueur, lime, and simple syrup
  • Spicy: Libélula Tequila, Combier, lime, and pequin pepper-infused simple syrup
